At Polwhele House, we believe that a curriculum should be exciting, varied and stimulating in order to tune in to the needs of children of all abilities. Modern teaching methods, daily challenges and homework are all geared towards encouraging the children to work in an independent way.

Throughout their time in both the Pre-Prep and the Prep School, parents are constantly updated on their child’s progress; we offer daily contact with teachers in the Pre-Prep and in the Prep School; assessments are sent home regularly; and reports are written throughout the year. Open days and parent-teacher meetings are held.
Our above average intake and small classes enable us to provide appropriate teaching for all within the classroom. However, high quality support teaching is available for those pupils who would benefit from additional help. The breadth of our curriculum and the pace of our teaching, combined with the differentiation of tasks throughout the school, means that all children are appropriately stretched.
In their final two years of school, children of all abilities follow the Common Entrance Syllabus in preparation for either Common Entrance or Scholarship examinations. This undertaking, which punctuates the passage from prep school to senior school, has proved to be a very positive experience, serving pupils favourably in the future.
The Educational Journey
During their time with us at Polwhele House, we conduct a range of assessments on our pupils to ensure that the individual and varying needs of each child are being addressed.
Teachers constantly informally assess their children to monitor progress and plan appropriately. We also use formal assessments such as Aspects and PIPS combined with Cognitive Ability Tests and internal examinations. We provide a full educational support programme as appropriate. Pupils also take part in National Curriculum assessments at the end of Key Stage 1 (Year 2) and Key Stage 2 (Year 6). Results in these public examinations are always very good and well above the national average.
The Next Stage
The main mission at Polwhele House is to prepare our pupils thoroughly, both socially and academically, for entry at 13+ (Year 9) to a wide variety of schools including local independent establishments and schools in the maintained sector. The achievements of Polwhelers in both types of establishment is impressive. The excellent Common Entrance syllabus also prepares our pupils for entry (a good proportion with scholarships/bursaries) to public schools further afield. Over the years we have sent pupils to Badminton, Blundell's, Bryanston, Cheltenham Ladies, Clifton, Eton, Harrow, Kelly College, King's Taunton, Millfield, Radley, Rugby, Sherborne, Shrewsbury, Wellington, Winchester and Wycombe Abbey.
